BUBBA WATSON

Bubba Watson

Apart from being a long driver, Bubba Watson is also one of the rare left handed players on the golfing circuit who likes to wear a timepiece on his wrist when playing. Bubba Watson is wearing the RM 38-01, RM 038 and RM 055 in real world conditions to accompany his game. Bubba Watson won his first Masters at Augusta in 2012 and again in 2014. He recently won his second Travelers Championship title in Connecticut.
Golf is a precise sport with no concessions and compromises and is a perfect real world test for Richard Mille.

Richard Mille liked the idea of associating an elegant object featuring complex mechanics with an exceptional striking force that drives very long distances.
Inspired from the world of golf, from its blend of duration, distance, the concentration of energy at the moment of the swing, and impact for a long-distance shot, from the contrast between the instantaneous impact on the ball and its long trajectory towards its target. In this creation, and as it was a competition model, we selected materials that would guarantee ergonomic lightness and shock-resistance.
The case is made of magnesium WE54 coated with Miarox® and the baseplate and bridges are in titanium. The latter are very long and span the movement from side to side, in a possible allusion to the shape of the clubs or trajectory of the ball.

"We had set our heart on developing this watch, directly linked to the developments that took place in creating the tourbillon model for Bubba Watson. I really wanted to revisit aesthetics of golf: I like the physical motions involved in this sport, which combine amplitude with precision, and the surprising sequence that contrasts moments of Zen-like preparation of concentration followed by the instantaneous shock of the shot, the long period of the ball’s trajectory and the subsequent walk to the next tee.
Our experience in developing resistance to G forces in our watches led us to choose grade 5 titanium for the baseplate and bridges of this “skeletonised” movement, as it is a material that provides the rigidity required for the accuracy and reliability of the movement.
As the watch was to be used under extreme conditions, we opted for manual winding by a traditional crown."

2014 - RM 38-01

Richard Mille has undertaken the development of yet another specific tourbillon watch for Bubba Watson with added functionality to complement his powerful drives on the course. The result is the RM 38-01 Bubba Watson, a timepiece that combines a patented G-sensor with a tourbillon mechanism, thus providing new insights for golfers during their game. The mechanical G-sensor, a Richard Mille world first containing more than 50 moving parts within a mere 17mm, allows the user to see the accumulated motion of their swing in G’s. The sensor, placed under 12 o’clock, is able to record the force generated by a golfer’s swing, specifically during the last segment. In reality this means that the RM 38-01 can record up to 20-G’s of acceleration, a very important insight for golfers such as Bubba Watson, renowned for his ability to hit a ball at more than 310 kilometers per hour.
