ABSOLUTE BEAUTY AND PURITY

The RM 017 embodied our next challenge: how to reconcile the extra flat with the complex mechanism of a tourbillon. The paradox was similar to trying to construct a Formula 1 racing car from a luxury saloon automobile. What thrilled me about this was creating a harmony between excellence/mechanical performance and ergonomics.

Main characteristics

This model enables the unobstructed contemplation of a technical spectacle thanks to a clear field of vision: the large Roman hour-markers are engraved/suggested on the sapphire crystal itself. To enhance the timepiece’s visual beauty, extremely slender bridges were used to highlight its architecture and mechanical structure, clearly visible through the case back.
Rectangular case. Available in titanium, 18k white gold or red gold, and gem-set case.

TORQUE LIMITING CROWN IN TITANIUM This additional security system prevents from accidental overwinding, which could cause damage such as the winding stem breaking or too much pressure on the barrel spring.

FUNCTION INDICATOR In a manner similar to a car's gearbox, the function indicator allows one to see the winding, neutral and hand setting positions as the crown is pulled out. Each position is indicated via a hand at 4 o’clock displaying the following functions: W (Winding) – N (Neutral) – H (Hands).

Main characteristics

WATCHCASE

The RM 017 portrays the current collection’s themes of motor sport and sailing, reflected in sleek, discreet lines that are among the thinnest of the collection, it represents a new, visual transformation suitable for all occasions with the same wrist fitting curvature and taper typical of all Richard Mille creations.
The case represents an uncompromising approach, with extensive attention to all details of the case design with numerous stamping and machining operations required for the three main components (front bezel, back bezel and caseband). More than 18 days of machine adjustment are required and more than 400 hours of technical research and drawing even before production can begin. Each case requires 202 separate machining operations. The case of the RM 017 requires 39 swaging operations including 16 striking, 270 milling operations.
The machining lasts 4 hours and 15 minutes. Concerning the finishing work, 1 day is needed for grinding, glazing and polishing. The design and execution of this watchcase typifies the complete holistic approach to all parts of the movement, case and dial. As a result, everything has been constructed according to extremely rigorous specifications. For example, a casing ring is no longer used and the movement is mounted on chassis mounting rubbers (ISO SW) fixed by 4 titanium screws. The tripartite case is water resistant to 30 meters, ensured by two Nitril O-ring seals. The case is assembled with 12 spline screws in grade 5 titanium and abrasion resistant washers in 316L stainless steel.

TITANIUM BASEPLATE

These components are manufactured in grade 5 titanium and treated with a black PVD coating. As a consequence the whole assembly is extremely rigid, with precise surface flatness, an essential for the perfect functioning of the geartrain.

VARIABLE INERTIA, FREE SPRUNG BALANCE

The free-sprung balance provides better reliability in the event of shocks, movement assembly and disassembly. It also guarantees better chronometric results over an extended period of time.
